On September 19th, Lebanese American Rima Fakih made history when she became the newest titleholder of Miss Michigan USA. She is the first Arab American to hold such a title. Judges selected Fakih amongst a group of 40 competitors based on a series of three major categories: personal interview, swimsuit/fitness, and evening gown.
As the winner, she will receive $100,000 in scholarships and prizes, including the opportunity to complete a master's degree at some of America's finest universities. Fakih, a Dearborn native, previously attained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2008, with a double major in Economics and Business Management.
No stranger to beauty pageants, Fakih most recently held the title of Miss Lebanon USA in which she made numerous appearances at Arabic community events. Now as Miss Michigan, Fakih will embark on an even larger adventure. In addition to traveling around the state to show her support to various charity causes, she will act as a role model for young women, speaking about the importance of self confidence, health awareness, and education.
Fakih will represent the state at the Miss USA pageant on April 18th, 2010 at the Planet Hollywood resort in Las Vegas. It has been 16 years since Michigan last saw their representative ascend to the highly coveted Miss USA title. To say the least, the state is thirsty for a win. And what more, the Arab American community is proud to see one of their own catapult to success.

I do have something to say to the person who spat on America about our lack of exposure to the rest of the world, it is not the American students' fault, its our twisted greedy idiotic government. So many Americans envy others' ability to speak other languages fluently and that person is not JUST Lebanese who can do this, Europeans, Mexicans, Brazilians etc can do this as well, and the majority of the global population have this mythical idea that American citizens have the power to tell our government what we want. In reality, it is the opposite. Immigrants receive better benefits than most college students so be grateful for all the favors our government provided to you for I have to resort to joining the military just so I can attend college and have the opportunity to explore the world. Our government consists of ignorant idiots who value money and power over knowledge which is treacherous in my eyes. Yet, I am a proud American and I am working very hard to climb the ladder so I can become a politician and represent America for what she was known before, a land of freedom. Stop with all the nonsense about religions. You're muslim, you're catholic, you're baptist, you're protestants, I got that! I am a Muslim from India and you will find Muslim celebrities all over India. I think most of the people over-reacting above might never have lived in a true democracy. I really hate the moral policing of people who are adamant to make others live in the way they want. There are a lot of moral policing kind of people and organizations here in India and we all hate that. But the good part of a democracy like India or even the US or UK is that we cannot be forced to do anything unless it is against our constitution or law. Lets be frank. Who are we to judge or comment on anyone else' life. No need to abuse anybody. Everybody has got his/her own life and let them live as per their own way. If you feel that they are doing something wrong then they will be judged on Judgment Day and you do not need to do that on earth. Leave aside this hating and cursing. I also find it ridiculous when I hear in the above comments that she is misrepresenting Islam. But what I read in the article above is that she was representing Michigan and now she will represent USA in international competitions. So, where does Islam or her representing Islam come from. At the same time, I would also like to mention that I get equally irritated when I see some of the posters mention about her studying in a Catholic school. What does the kind of school have to do with anything at all. Can we not live in a united and peaceful world instead of a divided world. Let people live their life. The Arab community must be proud that they have a good representative for the US, especially now with all the racial issues against Muslims.
