Ping Chong + Company Seeks Participants to tell Dearborn’s Arab American Muslim Story

Ping Chong + Company, an internationally acclaimed theater company known for bringing unheard voices to the stage, is partnering with the Arab American National Museum to present Undesirable Elements/Dearborn, an interview-based theater production for AANM’s Global Fridays series. The production is now accepting applications from Dearborn residents who identify as Arab American Muslim women or non-binary individuals to explore the diverse experiences and histories of Dearborn’s Arab American Muslim population.
The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2018.Ping Chong + Company will conduct extensive interviews with applicants between Feb. 24 and March 4, 2018. We are looking for stories that reflect a wide range of Dearborn experiences, be it as part of family history, your hometown, business location, or current place of residence. If you are chosen for an interview, we will contact you and do our best to work with your schedule.

A “seated opera for the spoken word,” the play will explore racism, the growth of the Arab American community, and the impact of Islamophobia. Founded in 1975 by acclaimed theatrical innovator and National Medal of Arts recipient Ping Chong, the company creates works of theater and art that explore the intersections of race, culture, history, art, media, and technology in the modern world.

Rehearsals will be on evenings and weekends from mid-April through the dates of performances on May 11-12, 2018. No previous performance experience required! Participants will be compensated for their time. Ages 18+.

Presented in conjunction with the opening of the AANM exhibition Mihrab.
