Donald Trump’s pick for his national security advisor, Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, claimed that Arabic signs along the U.S.-Mexico border are there to guide “radicalized Muslims” into the U.S.

Flynn made the comments in August with Breitbart News – a controversial “alt-right” source that has been labeled anti-Arab, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist, sexist, and more by readers.

In the interview, Flynn said he had personally seen photos of the Arabic signs from friends in the Border Patrol. However, Arabic signs and the terror threat at the U.S.-Mexico border could not be verified by any credible news source.

“I know from my friends in the Border Patrol in CBP that there are countries – radical Islamist countries, state-sponsored – that are cutting deals with Mexican drug cartels for some of what they call the ‘lanes of entry’ into our country,” Flynn said in the Breitbart interview. “And I have personally seen the photos of the signage along those paths that are in Arabic. They’re like way points along that path as you come in. Primarily, in this case the one that I saw was in Texas and it’s literally, it’s like signs, that say, in Arabic, ‘this way, move to this point.’ It’s unbelievable.”

Flynn also added that illegal Muslim immigration to the U.S. is something that “we should pay very, very close attention to.”

No one at the Center for Border Protection has commented on this matter, but a vice president at the National Border Patrol Council, the CBP’s labor union that endorsed Trump, told CNN that he was not aware of any Arabic signs.

This is not the first time Flynn has shared false or misleading news stories. In July, Flynn tweeted a fake news story about Hillary Clinton wearing a hijab “in solidarity with Islamic terrorists.” In his tweet, Flynn wrote: “This is showing disrespect for American Values and Principles. #NeverHillary.” But the real picture was one of Clinton wearing a scarf over her head during a 2009 visit to a mosque in Pakistan out of courtesy.

In October, he tweeted a fake news story from The True Pundit, alleging that Hillary Clinton’s emails exposed “Money Laundering, Sex Crimes w Children, etc.”

Mike Flynn’s son, Michael G. Flynn, was recently fired from the Trump transition team for using Twitter to spread fake news. Flynn’s son was perpetuating a conspiracy theory called Pizzagate, which asserts that a Washington, DC pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong, is the site of child sex trafficking ring. The theory came about because the owner of Comet Ping Pong,

Last week, the pizzeria was the target of a shooting by Edgar Welch, a North Carolina man who wanted to “self-investigate” the charges against Comet Ping Pong. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but three hours after the shooting incident, the younger Flynn tweeted “Until #Pizzagate proven to be false, it’ll remain a story.”

There is no word yet on whether the older Flynn’s fake news will get him removed from the Trump team, too.
