What is the Gaza 5K?
The Gaza 5K is an annual walk/run hosted by UNRWA USA. The Gaza 5K was created in 2012 to fund UNRWA’s Community Mental Health Programme (CMHP) and make access to mental health care a reality for all Palestine refugee children in the Gaza Strip.
What does the money do?
Your fundraising allows UNRWA to employ CMHP counselors, locally recruited from the refugee population, to provide psychosocial support to address the mental health needs of refugee children and families in the Gaza Strip who suffer from trauma due to repeated Israeli military assaults and the continued blockade.
What impact can my fundraising have?
Counseling offers kids in Gaza a safe space to express their emotions and fears and a way to learn valuable coping skills.
Our goal for the 2019 NYC Gaza 5K is to raise $350,000 which can employ 25 CMHP counselors in Gaza for the year to provide approximately 3,000 individual counseling sessions for 750 refugee students and 600 group counseling sessions for 700 refugee students.
Since 2015, the tri-state community has helped to provide psychosocial counseling to thousands of children. But the needs are still great and we know that trauma is not something that there is a quick fix for. Thank you for continuing to help Gaza’s children not just survive, but thrive.
