Monica Raqs :: Dance, Music, and Classes with Monica B.
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
Monica teaches a mixed level, musically driven Egyptian inspired raqs sharqi and raqs baladi dance class at Lines every Monday evening. She brings over 28 years of consistent and lived Arab dance, music, percussion, and language experience, and has taught classes at Lines since 2003.
Class is suitable for all levels of folks wanting to work with Cairo style “belly dance” (raqs sharqi and raqs beledi) and its related influences. We’ll spend each week exploring and being inspired by Egyptian and Arabic movement and music while focusing on respect for the dancer, the form, the cultural context, and the fun.
All of Monica’s classes at all levels have a musical approach to movement. Along with focused technique movement practice and combinations, classes include a dance style warm-up, a focus on posture and physical presentation, shimmy drills, conceptual, cultural, lyrical and informational dance context(s), lyrics and singing, percussion and rhythm recognition, and a dance-along or a dance circle—all to great Arabic music from the past and present.
Dancers newer to the style as well as experienced movers in various styles of raqs are all welcome and will find inspiration, challenges, a community of interesting and interested learners, and some laughs.
Classes are ongoing — please join in anytime. Register directly with Lines at the link.
