DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC\nThis May\, the Palestine Center cordially invi
 tes you to attend our annual Hisham Sharabi Memorial Lecture. This event h
 onors the life and legacy of the late Professor Hisham Sharabi\, the found
 er of The Jerusalem Fund and Palestine Center.\n\nThis year\, we are honor
 ed to have Bassam Haddad\, Associate Professor at the Schar School of Poli
 cy and Government at George Mason University\, as our keynote speaker. Pro
 fessor Haddad's lecture will focus on the intertwining themes of anti-impe
 rialism and anti-authoritarianism\, particularly as they relate to Syria a
 nd Palestine amid more than a decade of uprising\, counterrevolution\, and
  international intervention.\n\nProfessor Haddad will delve into the role 
 the question of Palestine played in discussions and debates around the Syr
 ian case within the ever-changing context of the Middle East\, including C
 hina’s growing involvement. Additionally\, Professor Haddad will provide
  insight into the intricate dynamics of the Syrian case where the juxtapos
 ition of contrasting local\, regional\, and international state and non-st
 ate actors unsettled historical paradigms of revolution and resistance.\n\
 nAbout Bassam Haddad\n\nBassam Haddad is Founding Director of the Middle
  East and Islamic Studies Program and Associate Professor at the Schar S
 chool of Policy and Government at George Mason University. He is the aut
 hor of Business Networks in Syria: The Political Economy of Authoritarian
  Resilience (Stanford University Press\, 2011) and co-editor of A Criti
 cal Political Economy of the Middle East (Stanford University Press\, 202
 1). Bassam is Co-Founder/Editor of Jadaliyya Ezine and Executive Direct
 or of the Arab Studies Institute. He serves as Founding Editor of the A
 rab Studies Journal and the Knowledge Production Project. He is co-produ
 cer/director of the award-winning documentary film\, About Baghdad\, and 
 director of the acclaimed three-part documentary series Arabs and Terrori
 sm. Bassam served on the Board of the Arab Council for the Social Scienc
 es and is Executive Producer of Status Audio-Visual Podcast. He is also
  the Executive Editor of the Knowledge Production Project and Director o
 f the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI). He received MESA'
 s Jere L. Bacharach Service Award in 2017 for his service to the profess
 ion. Currently\, Bassam is working on his second Syria book titled Under
 standing The Syrian Tragedy: Regime\, Opposition\, Outsiders (forthcoming
 \, Stanford University Press).
