SUMMARY:2025 Said Symposium
DESCRIPTION:WASHINGTON\, DC\n\nThis is an in-person event hosted by the Pea
ce\, Human Rights\, and Cultural Relations (PHRCR) department. Coffee/Lunc
h will be served.\n\n\nThe 2025 Said Symposium\, “The Middle East: Strug
gles for Justice\, Rights\, and Peace Amid Mass Atrocities and Military In
terventions\,” to be held on November 19-20\, 2025\, honors Dr. Abdul Az
iz Said’s legacy by convening scholars\, activists\, and policymakers to
explore paths towards justice and peace in the region. Through panels\, k
eynotes\, and dialogues\, the two-day conference examines both how interna
l dynamics such as authoritarianism and political Islam intersect with ext
ernal forces and global power structures\, and how struggles for peace and
human dignity confront these forces.\n\nSome of the key questions this ye
ar’s Said Symposium hopes to explore include:\n\n· Where does the promi
se of Syria’s transition lie?\n\n· What are the key obstacles facing Sy
ria’s transition\, and how can they be maneuvered?\n\n· What has been t
he role of the media in representations of atrocities and aggression in th
e region?\n\n· What have been the strengths and shortcomings of Global so
lidarity movements for Palestine\, Syria\, Iran\, Yemen\, and other parts
of the region?\n\n· What have been the normative and tangible gains of pe
 ace\, justice\, and rights activism for Palestine\, Syria\, Iran\, and oth
er parts of the region?\n\n· What can we consider to be (Global) Middle E
astern actors’ role in preserving highly threatened international human
rights and humanitarian legal norms and institutions?\n\n· How can we def
ine the military and geopolitical shifts taking shape in the region?\n\n·
What were the political and normative dynamics at play in the recognition
of Israeli mass atrocities?\n\n· Is there room for Peacebuilding at a ti
me of genocide and mass atrocities?\n\n· How can we assess and understand
the role and transformations of Islamist actors and political Islam in th
 e current moment?\n\nPRELIMINARY SCHEDULE:\n\nDay 1- November 19\, 2025: T
