A CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR SA'ED ATSHAN ON QUEER PALESTINE AND THE EMPIRE OF CRITIQUE
Date(s) - 02/28/2021
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
JVP DC Metro is honored to host Sa’ed Atshan, Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College, for a presentation and discussion on Sunday, February 28th, 2:00-4:00pm Eastern. An anthropologist by training and a Quaker by faith, Professor Atshan will speak about the transnational Palestinian LGBTQ social movement and the challenges it faces in seeking to meld the liberation struggles against settler colonialism and homophobia, the subject he addresses in his new book, Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique. (The JVP DC book club is currently reading his book.)
Reviewers have called Queer Palestine “utterly brilliant,” “a breath of fresh air,” “emotionally captivating,” and “a brave rejection of so-called radical myths of cultural authenticity.” Cornel West writes: “This powerful and prophetic book shows that the struggles for justice and freedom against empire and homophobia are indivisible. Sa’ed Atshan’s text is a major intellectual force for good.”
We invite all interested attendees to stay for JVP DC Metro’s monthly chapter meeting, which will follow Professor Atshan’s talk and the Q&A.
