SUMMARY:Anatomy of Genocide in Gaza | Gaza Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:\n\nWe here at Busboys and Poets Books have been watching with 
 horror as the siege on Gaza continues and the civilian death count rises d
 ay by day. In partnership with the Center for Muslim-Christian Understandi
 ng of Georgetown University\, we present The Gaza Lecture Series of 2024. 
 We invite everyone to come and learn more about the history of settler col
 onialism\, violence\, and genocide in Palestine. Join us for this session 
 to learn about the what/why/how behind genocide\, and what genocide looks 
 like in reality as it plays out in Gaza as we speak.\n\nUnited Nations Spe
 cial Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territ
 ory occupied since 1967 Francesa Albanese is joining us on the Busboys sta
 ge to share her scholarly and personal experiences surrounding Israeli mas
 s violence in Palestinian territories. She’ll be joined by Dr. Nader Has
 hemi\, Associate Professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics at Georgeto
 wn University.\n\nThis event is free and open to all. Our program begins a
 t 8:00 pm\, and will be followed by an audience Q&amp\;A. Copies of PALEST
 INIAN REFUGEES IN INTERNATIONAL LAW (2nd Edition) will be available for pu
 rchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is IN PERSO
 N and will be livestreamed.\n\nWe ask that guests RSVP in order to receive

 Albanese is an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of Interna
 tional Migration at Georgetown University\, and a Senior Advisor on Migrat
 ion and Forced Displacement for the think tank Arab Renaissance for Democr
 acy and Development (ARDD)\, where she co-founded the Global Network on th
 e Question of Palestine (GNQP)\, a coalition of renowned professional and 
 scholars engaged in/on Israel/Palestine. She has published widely on the l
 egal situation in Israel/Palestine\; her latest book\, PALESTINE REFUGEES 
 IN INTERNATIONAL LAW (Oxford University Press\, 2020)\, offers a comprehen
 sive legal analysis of the situation of Palestinian refugees from its orig
 ins to modern-day reality. She regularly teaches and lectures on Internati
 onal Law and Forced Displacement in European and Arab universities\, and s
 peaks frequently at conferences and public events on the legal situation o
 f Palestine. She worked for a decade as a human rights expert for the Unit
 ed Nations\, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Right
 s and the Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees. In these capaciti
 es\, she advised the UN\, governments\, and civil society across the Middl
 e East\, North Africa\, and the Asia Pacific\, on the enforcement of human
  rights norms\, especially for vulnerable groups including refugees and mi
 grants. She holds a Law Degree (with honors) from the University of Pisa a
 nd an LLM in Human Rights from the University of London\, SOAS.\n\nDr. Nad
 er Hashemi is the Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Und
 erstanding and an Associate Professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics 
 at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
  He is the author of Islam\, Secularism and Liberal Democracy: Toward a De
 mocratic Theory for Muslim Societies (Oxford University Press\, 2009) and 
 co-editor of The People Reloaded: The Green Movement and the Struggle for 
 Iran’s Future (Melville House\, 2011)\, The Syria Dilemma (MIT Press\, 2
 013)\, Sectarianization: Mapping the New Politics of the Middle East (Oxfo
 rd University Press\, 2017) and a four-volume study on Islam and Human Rig
 hts: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies (Routledge\, 2023). His next boo
 k project is entitled: “The Global Divide over Israel and Palestine.” 
 He is also a Non-Resident Fellow at Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN
 ).
