About this Event

Our It Starts Here Conference returns for another year – this time revamped (and digital)!

We are excited to launch our jam-packed weekend of learning with our opening event on Friday evening to mark 10 years since the Arab uprisings of 2011, and drawing important parallels between the Black Lives Matter Civil Rights Movements of 2013 to the present, with last year’s peak of activity sending powerful reverberations globally. How do we collectively become free? And what will that freedom look like? What can each movement learn from the other?

We will also be remembering the ongoing Palestinian struggle and reflecting on what meaningful solidarity between such diverse, but connected, movements looks like.

This conversation will unpack the histories, methods, and tactics uniting our causes as we march towards justice and liberation for all.

The panel will be moderated by Melina Villeneuve

Melina is a writer, researcher, podcaster, and activist for social justice. With the organisation she co-founded, dED_UCATION, Melina has been able to conduct research into university involvements with the global arms trade, working currently on a model for universities to adopt in order to ensure their investments, sponsorships, and partnerships are in line with their socially responsible investment policy. Through dED_UCATION, she’s written articles about the global arms trade, has hosted events with panelists, and is the host of dED_UCATION’s podcast, “dED Go Deep”. In Spring 2020, Melina was nominated to be on the board of the UK chapter of the American organisation Women of Color Advancing Peace & Security. She serves as one of their communication & social media officers. In light of the BLM movement breaking barriers over the summer, Melina started the “Got Melanin?” podcast. The podcast focuses on the lives and experiences of Black women in spaces often not made for Black women.
