Please join the New York Arabic Orchestra for an Arabic Rhythm and Vocal Workshop with instructor Shelley Thomas.
About the Class
The NY Arabic Orchestra Arabic Rhythm and Vocal Workshop is a 3-hour intensive class giving students an overview of the powerful connection between Arabic rhythm, poetry, and song, from the Andalusian period over 1000 years ago, to the Golden Age of Arabic music in the last century. The workshop welcomes both native and non-native Arabic speakers, as well as those studying or trained in singing. Coursework includes analysis and performance of classical Arabic songs, Arabic rhythms, and frame drum work. (Students may use their hands if they do not own a frame drum).
Prerequisite for those interested in joining the New York Arabic orchestra.
Ability to read sheet music, interest/strength in language acquisition, or strong ear suggested.
Limit 10 participants per section.

-Sounds like Strident, famed National Bulgarian choir Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares mixed with intricate Middle Eastern melodies such as those of Arabic diva Oum Kalthoum mixed with the intimacy of Bjork, Imogen Heap, Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead, with soulful sprinkles a la Anita Baker, James Blake and Little Dragon.

-She has taught workshops, recorded, performed and toured nationally and internationally with notable world music artists including Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, The Knights, Kronos Quartet, Simon Shaheen, Hassan Hakmoun, the New York Arabic Orchestra, Bulgarian Voices Trio, Brooklyn Raga Massive, Yael Deckelbaum and the Mothers, Adam Maalouf, Innov Gnawa, Mayssa Karaa, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Black Sea Hotel.
-She has performed at prestigious venues and festivals such as the Moscow Conservatory, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pioneer Works, National Sawdust, St. Ann’s Warehouse, Vancouver Island Music Festival, and Abu Dhabi Festival at Emirates Palace.
