The MEI Art Gallery at the Middle East Institute is hosting an open house as part of the DC-wide festival Art All Night on Saturday, September 14 from 7pm-midnight. The event will feature DJ Muath spinning Middle Eastern dance beats including dabke, rai, and chobi, a pop-up hosted by Adams Morgan bar The Green Zone, and an on-site calligrapher who will create unique mini-artworks for guests.
The gallery’s first exhibition, Arabicity | Ourouba, is a multilayered visual history of the Arab world through two decades of contemporary art. The show explores the aesthetic, conceptual, and socio-political concerns of the Arab world over the past twenty years as expressed by its leading artists. The show will feature works by 17 artists, including Chant Avedissian, Ayman Baalbaki, Hassan Hajjaj, Susan Hefuna, Taghreed Dargouth, Adel Abidin, Raeda Saadeh, and Mohamad Said Baalbaki.
