SUMMARY:Artist-Caretakers Crafting Circle with Aneesa Shami Zizzo
DESCRIPTION:MI.\n\nIn-person at AANM\nPurchase Tickets:\n$5 Museum Members\
 n$7 Student/Senior\n$10 General Public\n\nBeing the primary caretaker of a
young child as a working artist is often overlooked in the art world\, ye
t is a reality for many—the balancing act required to care for another
’s needs full time while continuing to pursue one’s practice is extrem
ely draining. Finding strength from her own community of fellow artist-par
ents and caretakers\, Aneesa will host a crafting circle inviting Dearborn
-based artist-parents to connect with one another. Craft circles and quilt
ing bees have a long lineage in American history cultivating relationship
and communication within marginalized communities. This event is a small e
xample of how working with one’s hands in a group setting can be a safe
space for sharing wisdom and encouragement with one another.\n\nParticipan
ts are encouraged to bring a handicraft with them to work one throughout t
 he session (examples include: sketching\, knitting\, crochet\, mending\, q
uilting\, and so on). Handsewing materials will also be provided for folks
to create a small applique tapestry.\n\nAneesa Shami Zizzo is an artist
and arts-based researcher in Los Angeles upcycling materials to create fib
er art. Her work references the sublime and world mythologies to evoke a s
ense of the collective unconscious within her imagery. Zizzo holds Bachelo
r of Fine Arts degrees in both Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City
Art Institute. She was the Textile Arts | Los Angeles AIR at Helms Design
Center in 2018\, and was a Fellow for the Mildred’s Lane Attention Labs:
Order of the Third Bird in 2015. Zizzo’s work has been exhibited nation
ally in galleries and museums\, including the Torrance Art Museum\, the Sa
n Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, and the California Center for the Arts\, Esc
ondido Museum\, among others. She is also the co-owner and director of Stu
dio 203\, an artist-run space in Los Angeles promoting fiber art\, craft-b
 ased work and social practices.
