Join Columbia SJP on WEDNESDAY at 5:30pm for an event on the centennial of the Balfour Declaration.
In 1917, Arthur Balfour penned an open letter to Lord Rothschild that forever changed the course of history in Palestine. The succinct, 67-word statement amounted to, in the words of Rashid Khalidi, the declaration of “a century long colonial war” against the native inhabitants of Palestine. In it, Balfour pledged the support of the British metropole to the Zionist settler-colonial project, providing sponsorship for the colonial domination and ethnic cleansing that continues on a century later.
During the event, a panel of MESAAS graduate students will reflect on the importance of the Balfour Declaration and its relevance to the current state of affairs in the region.
The discussion will be moderated by Nasser Abourahme.
The event will take place in Lerner Cinema. A Columbia University ID is required to enter the building. If you are not a Columbia/Barnard student, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we may accommodate you accordingly.
