DESCRIPTION:OAKLAND\, CA\nOverview\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in a family-friendly wo
 rkshop designed to teach you the history and basics of henna\, or mehndi.\
 n\n\n\n\n\nHenna\, as it is called in the SWANA (Southwest Asia North Afri
 ca)\, or mehndi\, as it is referred to in South Asia\, is both an ancient 
 and modern practice that commemorates religious events\, cultural celebrat
 ions\, and momentous occasions.  Many often do not understand when it is 
 appropriate to do henna\, and will end up inadvertently participating in c
 ultural appropriation. For educators\, it’s important to connect with ou
 r students culturally by understanding these nuances.\nThis workshop inten
 tionally coincides with the end of Ramandan\, a month-long Islamic practic
 e of strengthening connection with Creator through fasting and prayer.  T
 he end of Ramadan includes a three-day celebration called Eid al-fitr\, an
 d those who observe will often do henna to celebrate.\n\nBring your family
 \, kids (8 years old and up)\, and friends to practice designs from variou
 s parts of the SWANA and South Asian regions\, and leave with a design of
