Beirut Calling II: Dinner Fundraiser in Support of our Palestinian Sisters!
Thank you for your support of and interest in our fundraiser for Palestinian refugees in Beirut, Lebanon. Khaloud, who we will be sending all the profit from the dinner to, is a matriarch of Burj al-Barajneh camp in the outskirts of Beirut. Lebanon’s largely stateless Palestinian communities, long neglected by the international community, have been especially hard-hit by the ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon – one of the worst in modern history. A cornerstone of her community, one of Khaloud’s many ongoing projects is a community group that organizes activities and provides material goods for specially-abled children. This fundraiser is in support of Khaloud’s efforts to improve the lives of these children, who have very few services available to them.
Carly met Khaloud in 2012 when she was studying abroad in Beirut and has had the honor of seeing Khaloud’s tireless work toward the betterment of her community ever since. Khaloud’s family was forcibly displaced from their native Palestine to the Burj al-Barajneh camp at age two in 1969, when the camps were of tents and sand. Now the camps, narrow concrete pathways weaving between quickly decaying “temporary” buildings, are painted with emblems of the resistance of Palestinian existence. Khaloud has been part of the arcs of this resistance- the everyday unglamorous demands of revolution and survival, as in the case of Palestinians, survival is a revolution in itself. Besides the women’s groups, community support groups, and community gathering places she helped to create, Khaloud created a program to support the specially abled children of the camp who fall through the cracks. These kids have wide ranging abilities- and families who struggle to survive and support the extra needs of their children. Khaloud is there with rain jackets, diapers, wheelchairs, activities and her compassion. Your dinner attendance supports her efforts with these children and their families- thank you, “Chokrun” in Arabic. We look forward to sharing Lebanese food with you!
