DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nSAN FRANCISCO\, CA\n\nExplore examples of Arabic typograp
 hy from Letterform Archive’s collection with this in-person\, docent-led
  tour.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe history of the Arabic speaking peoples of Southwes
 t Asia and North Africa (SWANA) is complex—nested in various cultural\, 
 religious\, social\, political\, technological and economic contexts. Lett
 erform Archive invites you to come celebrate the history of Arabic graphic
  design across borders with our docent Sabiha Basrai. There are a multitud
 e of scripts in the SWANA region—more than 28 languages that use the Ara
 bic script (Persian\, Urdu\, Ottoman Turkish\, etc)\, and scripts like Tam
 azight\, Hebrew\, and Ge’ez\, that showcase the rich cultural diversity 
 of the region. This tour will focus on the diversity of Arabic calligraphi
 c styles\, and show examples of font development that required transformin
 g a once handwritten art into movable type.\n\nOur docent for this in-pers
 on tour is Sabiha Basrai.\n\nThis tour was made possible by a generous gif
 t from Aslan Graphics.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSabiha Basrai is a co-owner
  of Design Action Collective—a worker-owned cooperative dedicated to se
 rving social justice movements with art\, graphic design\, and web develop
 ment. She is a Core Member of the Alliance of South Asians Taking Action\,
  where she works with racial justice organizers on international solidarit
 y campaigns. Sabiha is part of the Center for Political Education Advisor
 y Board\, a member of Race Forward's Affiliate Training team\, and a docen
 t at the Letterform Archive focusing on global scripts and internationalis
 m.\n\n\n
