About this Event
Due to popular demand, Friday, October 30, 2020 at 12PM-1PM(EST), the Museum of Palestinian People will be “Continuing the Conversation on The Palestinian Diaspora Community in Chile and Palestine.” Please join us in welcoming back two amazing community leaders of the Palestinian diaspora community in Chile and Colombia, Marcello Marzouka and Odette Yidi.
What you may not know is that Latin America is host to an estimated half-million people of Palestinian descent. Palestinians began migrating to Latin America in the 1800’s and there have been waves of migration ever since. With 500,000 Palestinian-Chileans, Chile is recognized for having the largest Palestinian diaspora community outside the Arab world. This year, the globally renowned Chilean football team, Club Deportivo Palestino, celebrated its 101st birthday. Club Deportivo Palestino, is one of many contributions that the Palestinian diaspora community has made in Latin America.
Our speakers will share with you their family’s diaspora stories, their distinct views of what it is like to be a Palestinian in Chilean and Colombian society today, and what they are doing to stay connected to Palestine. There will be a longer question session so that you have the opportunity to engage in conversation with our guests during this webinar.
Whether you joined or missed the last webinar on August 22, 2020, this conversation is not to be missed! Our Palestinian friends in Chile and Colombia have a lot to share and want to provide the answers to all of your unanswered questions about the diaspora in Latin America.
Marcelo Marzouka: A Palestinian-Chilean lawyer and sociologist. Currently a member of the Board of Director of the Palestinian Community in Chile, he is also lecturer in Arab Studies in the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and partner in Invest Palestine, a consultancy company based in Santiago and Bethlehem, which aims to promote investment and entrepreneurship in Palestine.
Odette Yidi: A University Professor and expert on the Palestinian Diaspora Community in the Caribbean.
Donations are welcome: We are very grateful for your partnership and support. The Museum of the Palestinian People is based in Washington DC and here to tell our stories, which encompass the rich history, vibrant arts, culture and spirit of a people who thrive even in the face of adversity.
