Dance artists Audrey Johnson (Detroit) and Leila Awadallah (Minneapolis) share an evening of work focused on identity, place and imagination.
Johnson will share a performance of her solo project towards ], an excavation and an amplification of and in the direction of the self. towards ] poses the question “how do I remember myself?” while conceptualizing multiplicity in the body, emerging and responding towards black, queer, mixed ancestral embodied knowledge from past, present and future.
Awadallah will share RAS ABU ‘AMMAR IS HERE, a multidisciplinary piece created in collaboration with Palestinian-American visual artist Lamia Abukhadra that looks at settler colonial violences and strategies of ethnic cleansing both in the U.S. and Palestine, while engaging creative tools of writing, moving, speaking and imagining as a means of resisting erasure and forces of oppression with urgency.
The evening is a collaboration with Daring Dances, and curated by Clare Croft, in partnership with UMS.
This performance contains sensitive language and references to experiences of war and displacement. Please note the artists will host a post-show discussion with the audience.
