 ites you to celebrate the launch of the John W. Kiser Research Initiative 
 on the life and legacy of the 19th-century Algerian anti-colonial leader\,
  the Emir Abd El-Kader. The event will take place on Thursday\, January 1
 5th at noon in Riggs Library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\nJoin us with Dr.
  John Esposito\, Dr. Josef Meri\, and Dr. Nader Hashemi to learn more abou
 t the Research Initiative\, Abd El-Kader’s remarkable legacy\, and his e
 nduring relevance to international affairs. Among other exciting opportuni
 ties for scholars and students\, the event will also announce the launch o
 f a grant prize competition which will award ten generous scholarships to 
 eligible students at Georgetown University.\nSpeakers\nJohn Esposito is D
 istinguished University Professor\, Professor of Religion and Internationa
 l Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University and the Founding
  Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in the
  Walsh School of Foreign Service. Past President of the American Academy o
 f Religion and Middle East Studies Association of North America\, Esposito
  has served as consultant to the U.S. Department of State and other agenci
 es\, European and Asian governments\, corporations\, universities\, and me
 dia worldwide and ambassador for the UN Alliance of Civilizations and was 
 a member of the World Economic Forum’s Council of 100 Leaders and E. C. 
 European Network of Experts on De-Radicalisation. He has received honorary
  doctorates from St. Michael’s College\, University of Toronto\, the Uni
 versity of Sarajevo\, University of Florida and Immaculata University as w
 ell as the American Academy of Religion’s Martin E. Marty Award for the 
 Public Understanding of Religion\, Pakistan’s Quaid-i-Azzam Award for Ou
 tstanding Contributions in Islamic Studies\, Georgetown University’s Sch
 ool of Foreign Service Outstanding Teacher Award and Georgetown’s Career
  Research Achievement Award. Esposito’s more than 50 books have been tra
 nslated into over 45 languages.\n\nJosef Meri was most recently a visitin
 g professor at Georgetown University’s branch campus in Qatar and served
  as a research affiliate at the Alwaleed Center from 2021 to 2024. In June
  2024\, he was appointed Senior Fellow with ACMCU’s Bridge Initiative. H
 is extensive background in the academic study of interfaith relations in p
 ast and present in the Middle East and global contexts\, Middle Eastern an
 d Islamic history\, and the history of religions has led him to hold vario
 us academic positions. Meri has lived in various cities around the world\,
  including Amman\, Berkeley (California)\, Binghamton (New York)\, Cairo\,
  Cambridge (UK)\, Damascus\, Doha\, Jerusalem\, London\, Munich\, and Oxfo
 rd (UK). He has taught in institutions in London\, Cambridge\, Munich\, an
 d Doha. His teaching encompasses themes of identity and belonging\, histor
 y and autobiography\, memory\, religious pluralism\, interfaith and inter-
 spiritual relations\, religious experience\, the sacred and the secular\, 
 comparative religion\, the history of religions\, and applied research met
 hodologies in the humanities and social sciences.\nModerator\nNader Hashem
 i is the Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understandi
 ng and an Associate Professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics at the E
 dmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He is t

 c Theory for Muslim Societies (Oxford University Press\, 2009) and co-edi
 tor of The People Reloaded: The Green Movement and the Struggle for Iran

 ord University Press\, 2017) and a four-volume study on Islam and Human R
 ights: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies (Routledge\, 2023). He is fre
 quently interviewed by PBS\, NPR\, CNN\, Al Jazeera\, Pacifica Radio\, Alt
 ernative Radio and the BBC and his writings have appeared in the New York
  Times\, Newsweek\, Wall Street Journal\, The Nation\, Al Jazeera Onlin
