The 2016 documentary film, “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble” offers an engaging method to learn about the complex nature of cultural identity and cultural stressors/supports that include both social networks and resilience factors as outlined in the DSM-5 for Cultural Formulation.
We will view performance footage, personal interviews, and archives telling in-depth stories of the musicians in the Silk Road Ensemble from Syria, China, Iran, Spain and the U.S. The film demonstrates the ability of music to blur geographical boundaries, blend disparate cultures, and inspire hope for both artists and audiences in the face of societal traumas such as the Syrian war; the Chinese cultural revolution; the 1979 Iranian revolution, the Iraq/Iran war, Arab Spring; and 9/11.
