SUMMARY:Film and Discussion: Silencing Student Voices
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday November 17\, join “Silencing Student Voices\,” a
n Online Film Salon with Free Palestine protesters and advocates for free
speech on campus\, at 3:00pm ET. Register to join the discussion and acces
 s the films: Tinyurl.com/VFHL-November2024.\n\nAbstract:\n\nIsrael’s war
on Palestine\, following the October 7 attack by Hamas\, has driven an on
going student protest movement on the nation’s university campuses. Thes
e protests have adopted similar calls for divestment from the war industri
es supplying the advanced weapons systems the US government is sending to
Israel. Common protest tactics include encampments\, banner drops\, leafle
ting\, and self-education. As the US continues its unqualified support for
Israel\, how do we assess the successes of these movements? How have univ
ersities framed these protests? What has prompted Higher Ed's extreme resp
onses involving the deployment of urban police forces? How have definition
s of constitutionally guaranteed free speech been redrawn by Higher Ed? Wh
at has been the impact of the “Palestine exception”? What if any are t
he limits of non-violent protest\, and according to whose interests?\n\nPa
nelists and Moderator:\n\nIlan Cohen is a recent graduate of the Jewish Th
eological Seminary and Columbia University where he was a founder of Colum
bia Jews for Ceasefire\, a collective of students seeking to bring an imme
diate ceasefire\, a full hostage deal\, and an end to the Occupation throu
gh organizing within their communities. Ilan has organized within the Amer
ican Jewish community and on the ground in East Jerusalem and the West Ban
 k. His research examines legacies of systemic antisemitism and white supre
macy on the development of progressive Jewish organizing power at Columbia
University and across the United States.\n\nRama Ali Kased is an Associat
e Professor in Race and Resistance Studies in the College of Ethnic Studie
s at San Francisco State University. Her community organizing work spans a
cross several major U.S. cities. She has served on multiple boards of comm

rigin\, Rama has founded organizations including Arab Woman Active in Arts
and Media (AWAAM) in New York City and the Arab Resource and Organizing C
enter (AROC) in the San Francisco Bay area. She is also a member of the US
Palestine Communities Network\, Palestinian Feminist Collective\, and Fac
ulty for Justice in Palestine-SFSU\n\nMaryam Alwan is a Palestinian-Americ
an and a senior at Columbia University. Maryam has been a leader within th
e student movement to pressure Higher Ed to divest from companies with tie
s to Israel. She was arrested at one of the first encampments that sparked
the international student intifada in 2024 and is a plaintiff in two laws
uits against Columbia. She wrote in the Columbia Spectator\, “Weaponizin
g claims of discrimination to stifle speech and symbolism critical of Isra
el inherently results in discrimination against those of us whose families
were either already displaced or are actively being wiped out.”\n\nNata
sha Lennard (moderator) is a British-born\, Brooklyn-based writer and Asso
ciate Director of the Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism graduate
program at the New School for Social Research in New York. She is the aut
