WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) is proud to present a film screening of the documentary, “Seed Queen of Palestine” and a discussion with the film’s director, Mariam Shahin. The film screening will take place on Thursday, March 21 at 6:30pm in the CCAS Boardroom in ICC 141 (enter through ICC 241).

About the film: In the fields and terraces of the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian woman is leading a quiet revolution. Inspired by memories of her grandmother and the delicious food of her childhood, Vivien Sansour wants to reintroduce long forgotten Palestinian produce to people across the West Bank and beyond. Vivien experiments with growing the treasured seeds in her own garden beside the separation wall, in eyesight of Israeli soldiers. Can she persuade farmers struggling with the pressures imposed by the Israeli occupation and Palestinian agri-business to embrace such traditional crop-growing methods?

About the director: Mariam Shahin has covered the Arab World since 1988 as a writer, documentary producer, and director. She has produced close to 70 documentaries and has authored or co-authored 5 books about the Arab World. Shahin has covered war, peace, conflict, and development in Cairo, Khartoum, Baghdad, Beirut, Damascus, Amman, and Gaza for several news agencies including BBC, ABC, and Al-Jazeera.

The event is made possible by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education and other generous donors. Members of the general public as well as in the Georgetown University community are welcome to attend. Please direct any questions and accommodation requests to Madison Fisher: mcf77@georgetown.edu.
