About this Event
In Algeria, the Aures Mountains and surrounding Wilayas are home to the Chaoui tribe, one subgroup of the native North Africans of the Maghreb known as Imazighen (singular – Amazigh). Amazigh means “free person” and is the name of the overall indigenous groups across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and even Egypt.
The Chaoui tribe has a distinct dance that is centered around literally bouncing one’s belly. This dance is known to represent the fertility, strength, and maternal energy of Chaoui women and their land.
Join Esraa Warda, teaching and performance artist of North African traditional dance, in a dance workshop and a communal seksou (couscous) dinner in community.
