Global Food Crises Briefing

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in conjunction with the Senate and House Hunger Caucuses jointly invite you to a congressional briefing on the state of the global food crises. The briefing will highlight findings from the 2019 Global Report on Food Crises, which provides the latest estimates of severe hunger in the world. The Report reveals that there continues to be an alarming number of food insecure people across the world who require urgent humanitarian action.
An estimated 113 million people in 53 countries faced acute food insecurity in 2018 compared to 124 million in 2017. Despite the slight decrease, the number of people in the world facing food crises has remained well over 100 million in the last three years, and the number of countries affected has risen. Nearly two-thirds of those facing acute hunger are in just eight countries: Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Environmental changes and natural disasters pushed another 29 million people into acute food insecurity in 2018.
