Washington, DC
Mahmoud Abbas, the last of the generation of Fatah’s founding leaders, became the head of the Palestinian National Authority in 2005. Dedicated to a two-state solution and opposed to violence, Abbas has twice been within reach of a peace agreement, only to reject it. To understand why, Rumley, research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and Tibon, an Israeli journalist covering Washington for Haaretz.com, trace the life of this complex man from his childhood in Galilee and his family’s flight during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War to his role in the Oslo peace process and failure to stop the Second Intifada. The first political biography of Abbas in English, this book draws on interviews with pivotal figures in Ramallah, Jerusalem, and Washington to illuminate Abbas, the crisis of the Palestinian national movement, and the stalled peace process.
