The Bossa Cultural Lab is excited to present NYC-based dancer Hussein Smko with an evening of performance and dialogue in this one-time only event. Join us as we explore together the ways in which art and performance can provide an escape from violence and loss.
Hussein is a self-trained dancer and choreographer of Arab/Kurdish roots who was spotted by the Battery Dance Company through social media in 2014. Trained via Skype, Smko immigrated to the United States in 2016 and began his residency with Battery Dance as the first recipient of the Adel Euro Campaign for Dancers Seeking Refuge. He has performed at the Battery Dance Festival and as part of the company’s residency with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective. He has also taught for Battery Dance in New York City public schools, at the New York Public Library, and at USC in Los Angeles, for a Spoken Word and Dance program with Iraqi journalist Riyadh Mohammed. He recently made his DC debut at the second annual One Journey Festival.
