About This Event
We end the year with a lunchtime book discussion of Mahmood Mamdani’s new Neither Settler
Nor Native: The Making of Unmaking of Permanent Minorities. Mamdani’s book places a crucial
theme of Middle Eastern history and politics within a global context. He argues that we must
regard the rise of the nation state and the history of colonial repression as twin processes
begun in 1492. The book’s chapters on Indians and the United States, Jews and Nazi Germany,
Apartheid in South Africa, Colonialism in the Sudan, and the Israel/Palestine question build to a
final chapter on how we might use this history to decolonize the political community.
