Interlaced is a two-person exhibition featuring Washington D.C. based artists Mohammed Obaid and Yazan Aboushi. The works on display explore the deep connections and shared interest of the artists with their Arab legacy and history. Through their distinct process, Obaid and Aboushi provide a contemporary view of the Arab experience, raising questions about the self in relation to nature, heritage, justice, and cross-culturalism.

The maze created by the arabesque in the work of Obaid evokes the interlacing branches of the ancestral olive trees featured in the photography of Aboushi. Together this repeated chain of interlaced geometrical and vegetal shapes creates a union between the works and the two artists and speaks to the complexity of identity formation.

Interlaced: Mohammed Obeid & Yazan Aboushi. is organized for the Slow Down Market.

Jordanian artist Mohammad Obaid (b 1988) is based between Washington DC and his hometown, Amman. After studying graphic design and exploring various forms of artistic expression such as calligraphy and street art, he progressively moved towards specializing in layered paper art. Influenced by his Syrian ancestry, Mohammad draws his inspiration from the natural and urban landscapes of the Levant and the geometry and rhythm of the Islamic art. He likes to blend these patterns and influences in order to create unique and modern pieces, which are a tribute to both the heritage and the vibrant youth of the Middle East, but also reflect his own experience living at the crossroads of continents and cultures.

Yazan Aboushi (b 2000) is a Palestinian-American photographer and storyteller currently residing in Washington DC. Aboushi began his career in photography when he realized that he could use photography to tell the story of his people and bridge the gap between his east and west identities. A passionate environmentalist and educator, Aboushi thrives at the intersection of conservation and storytelling, specializing in environmental justice and education. From the rolling hills of Palestine to the golden shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Aboushi uses storytelling to foster genuine relationships between people and their environments.
