Islam is a belief system held by over one billion people.. Yet, little is taught about its core beliefs, texts, and rituals. This series continues where the first sessions left off, by continuing to introduce Non-Muslims to Islam and Muslim communities. It is designed to engage students on Islam in our present context.

What is Islam and what are its core tenets? This module, covered over 3 classes, will cover the essential beliefs and practices of Muslims. Focus will be given on the Ḥadīth of Gabriel, an occasion where the Archangel Gabriel posits central questions to the Prophet Muhammad. The answers to these questions provide the blueprint of the fundamental beliefs and actions of Islam.

Course Objectives:

To Introduce the Islamic scriptures: Quran and Ḥadīth

To recognize Islamic concepts such as Islam, Īmān, and Iḥsān.
To understand the interplay between action, belief, and spirituality in Islam
