Arab Center Washington DC
Arab Center Washington DC is convening a panel of experts to discuss the future of the new Iraqi government and of al-Sudani’s government program; to examine challenges facing the country, including political disagreements, corruption, and disputes between the central government and the autonomous Kurdish region; and to assess the government’s impact on regional and international relations and offer policy recommendations for the Biden administration. Considering the Sadrist movement’s ability to mobilize protests and its lack of a role in the new government, is Iraq headed for more instability and violence? What is the likelihood that the government will address persistent conditions that sparked mass protests in October 2019? What are the implications for regional dynamics, especially given Iran’s involvement in Iraq and its recent attacks in Iraqi Kurdistan? What are the implications for US-Iraq relations? And how can the Biden administration support inclusive and democratic governance in Iraq?
