SUMMARY:Iraq in the Wake of the Iran War: Governance\, Security\, and Econo
 mic Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Where: Zoom Webinar\n\nThe US-Israeli war on Iran has placed ne
ighboring Iraq under serious political\, security\, and economic strain. I
ran-affiliated groups in Iraq have targeted US interests\, drawing retalia
tory strikes on Iraqi territory. While the memorandum of understanding bet
ween the United States and Iran to end the war and reopen the Strait of Ho
rmuz could ease pressure on global energy markets\, the broader regional e
scalation\, including attacks on Gulf oil and gas infrastructure and disru
ptions to maritime transit\, has already strained Iraq’s oil-dependent e
conomy.\n\nTo assess the war’s consequences for Iraq\, Arab Center Wash
ington DC and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown Un
iversity are organizing a critical webinar to explore the governance\, sec
urity\, and economic challenges facing the country. The discussion will ad
dress the Muhassasa system and ethnosectarian divisions\, the role of Iran
-affiliated groups and the question of disarmament\, the economic toll of
energy disruption\, corruption\, and oil dependence\, and the impact of US
policy on Iraq’s stability and future trajectory.\n\nWelcoming Remarks:
Tamara Kharroub (Deputy Executive Director &amp\; Senior Fellow\, Arab Ce
nter Washington DC)\n\nPanelists\n\n Zahra Ali (Associate Professor\, Dep
artment of Sociology and Anthropology\, Rutgers University)\n Lahib Higel
