But Israel has also become a deeply div isive subject\, as painful generational cracks have emerged within the Jew ish community. Points of contention–including Israel’s apartheid polic ies toward its non-Jewish citizens as well as its oppression of Palestinia ns living on occupied lands–have led to debate\, protest\, and even cens orship.\nFocusing on the stories of two young Americans raised to defend I srael at all costs\, Israelism traces their awakening to Israel's dehumani zation of Palestinians and the ongoing violence of the occupation.  The f ilm explores the past\, present\, and future of the relationship between A merican Jews and Israel\, as growing numbers question whether support for Israel should condition and define their Jewish identity.  Featuring a ra nge of American Jewish thinkers\, community leaders and activists\, Israel ism asks how and why Israel became the cornerstone of American Judaism\, w hat the consequences have been\, and what will happen as divisions continu e to grow.\n\nPanelists:\nErin Axelman\, Director and Producer of Israelis m\, is a trans Jewish filmmaker who has produced videos for Senator Ed Mar key\, as well as Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Erin is the Co-Executive Direc tor of Tikkun Olam Productions\, which is a progressive multimedia storyte lling collective\, and executive director of Pushed Learning and Media. Fo r three years\, Erin ran the multi-disciplinary high-school hip-hop progra m at the Wheeler School in Providence\, Rhode Island\, and has a solo hip- hop album\, “Too Much.”\n\nSimone Zimmerman is the central character i n the documentary Israelism. In 2014\, she helped found IfNotNow which sta tes\, “[Will the Jewish American Community] recognize that Palestinian a nd Jewish safety are intertwined\, and join together in the fight for equa lity\, justice and a future for all?” Simone was national Jewish outreac h coordinator for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign and has worked f or a variety of human rights organizations focusing on both Palestinian ri ghts as well as the fight against antisemitism.\n\nLubna Alzaroo grew up i n Hebron\, Palestine\, before moving to the United States for graduate sch ool on a Fulbright Scholarship. She has a Ph.D. in English from the Univer sity of Washington and is currently a part time lecturer at the University of Washington and South Seattle College. Her research is particularly int erested in the representation of settler colonial infrastructure\, necropo wer\, and the environment in both U.S. and Palestinian literature.\n\nPete r Beinart (Moderator) is Editor-at-Large\, Jewish Currents\; MSNBC Contrib utor\; Professor of Journalism and Political Science\, Newmark School of J ournalism\, CUNY\; Fellow\, Foundation for Middle East Peace\; and frequen t contributor to the New York Times.
