About the Webinar

In the middle of the night on January 19, 2022, Israel demolished the home of the Salhiya family in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem and arrested at least 18 people, including members of the family. This raid comes after a year of nationwide Palestinian protests—with widespread international solidarity—against evictions in Sheikh Jarrah. In the meantime, the Palestinian Bedouin communities in the Naqab are facing renewed threats of evictions and demolitions. Over the past week, thousands protested the displacement of Palestinians in Al-Sa’ua, one of 36 Palestinian Bedouin villages in the Naqab that are not recognized by Israel, deprived of access to basic services and infrastructure, and disconnected from other Palestinian communities. The protests were met with heavily armed Israeli police in addition to raids and mass arrests, including of minors.

Experts at this webinar will discuss the volatile situation in the Naqab in the context of Israel’s larger and ongoing policy of displacement and dispossession against Palestinians. They will address the significance and legal status of the Naqab area, the growing and unified Palestinian mobilization against Israeli oppression, the role of the international political community and institutions, and the importance of voices from the Bedouin community and accurate media reporting.
