Further Information on LLSP
The goal of the LLSP is to provide Muslim women active in their communities with content-rich programming and high-profile issues facing the Muslim ummah and especially Muslim women. Participants will gain an understanding of Islamic Law and its sources providing them with a platform to speak with knowledge and to pursue research. Included are “hot topics” such as the non-permissibility of female genital mutilation, research which KARAMAH has recently published and presented at the United Nations. The workshop will include a discussion of the importance of the #MeToo movement and the issue of combating domestic violence, an area of KARAMAH’s leadership in the context of Muslim communities and families. LLSP also focuses on leadership development approaches which are relevant and, perhaps, unique to women and culturally attuned to Muslim women in both the U.S. and international context.
KARAMAH’s speakers are experts and recognized leaders and scholars in their fields of Islamic law, Islamic history, Muslim women’s history and contributions, the Islamic sciences, and other areas. Experienced workshop facilitators lead sessions on Muslim women leadership development, Islamic approaches to conflict transformation and to peacemaking, and nonviolent communications. Participants are encouraged to share their own work and activities in these areas and will have opportunities to present informally.
Participants include Muslim women from across the globe, U.S. and international based, from a diversity of backgrounds and interests. They are; Islamic scholars and researchers, board members, volunteers, and activists in Muslim organizations and communities, journalists, filmmakers, and from other fields. The result is a dynamic group of powerful women providing an opportunity for thoughtful learning and debate. Participants can build networks which can provide long-lasting support for future endeavors and careers. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the historic sites of Washington DC as well as to visit local mosques and Islamic centers.
In 2018, the LLSP will be held in Washington, DC from July 9 to July 27. A one-week Executive Session for women with senior leadership experience will be held from July 9 to 13. Applications are due April 27 at
