About this Event
“Le Beirut… She is made from peoples’ souls.” – Fairouz
When the world stopped cracking open, you could see.
You could see the destruction of your city, the neighborhoods you walked, danced and lived in… gone. You could see the dead amid the rubble, the blood draining down your friends faces, the ghost shell of the city that had seen you grow.
This is just a little of what it felt like for hundreds of thousands that Tuesday where everything changed in Lebanon.
On August 4, 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate blew up the port of Beirut, capital of Lebanon, a city that survived 15 years of horrific civil war and still managed to flourish again. The explosion created a blastwave that levelled buildings near the port and caused extensive damage over much of the rest of the capital, which is home to two million people.
For reasons too vast to explain here the Lebanese don’t trust their government to do anything to help them. They are on their own. Except they are not. We can help. You can help. Right here and right now.
All proceeds from this event will go to help the people of Beirut. We have a very trusted contact on the ground in Beirut. Pierre Haddad’s family, his daughters and wife, have been from the very first day providing help amid the destruction, even as they themselves are suffering too. With their help we will identify trusted grass roots organizations in Mar Mikhael and Gemmayze to donate the money. Why Mar Mikhae and Gemmayze? They are some of the most affected areas by the blast and the beating heart of the art scene in Lebanon’s capital. As dancers we understand the role of art in giving humans a full experience of life. We also know that artists are often left for last when it comes to aid. All earnings from the online dance festival will go towards rebuilding house and business in these neuralgic points of Beirut’s cultural and artistic scene.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
12 CONTACT HOURS, 8 WORKSHOPS, 1 PURPOSE.
You can buy a package that gets you admission to all workshops or you can just make a donation of whatever amount you want for the sake of supporting the cause.
All earnings from this event will go towards helping Lebanese people in Beirut, in specific in Mar Mikhael and Gemmayze, a neuralgic zone for the arts and culture scene in Beirut.
We will also have a show featuring instructors and guest artists on Friday, September 18. The show will be premiered via YouTube and available for 48 hours, people will be encouraged to donate via Paypal to support Move4Lebanon’s cause.
