Organization:
Organizer JCARR - Jewish Community Alliance For Refugee Resettlement

We’ve collected an excellent line-up of storytellers from the New Haven area to share their tales of Living in a Foreign Language that are sure to entertain, move, and inspire you.

Ticket includes one (1) beer, wine, or soft drink and homemade Syrian snacks prepared by one of our resettled families.

All proceeds go towards ensuring that JCARR has the funds to continue resettling refugee families in our community.

ABOUT JCARR

In the summer of 2015, the US became acutely aware of the global refugee crisis as images and stories of refugees displaced by the worsening civil war in Syria filled our newspapers, evening newscasts, and social media feeds. Groups all over Connecticut — churches, synagogues, mosques, clubs, colleges – sought information and offered to help by sponsoring refugees in their own communities. In New Haven, the local organization Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services (IRIS) determined to more than double its refugee numbers in 2016, from 230 to 530. To do that, IRIS launched an innovative Community Co-sponsorship program and by early 2016, there were 50 community groups interested in resettling refugee families in Connecticut. Five synagogues and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven came together to form the Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR) in order to answer the call for Community Co-sponsors from IRIS.

In three and a half years, JCARR has resettled four families: one from the Democratic Republic of Congo, two from Syria, and one from Iraq. For most of us involved with JCARR, these were the first people we’ve known from these countries. It has been a profoundly moving experience getting to know these families, and the learning has been reciprocal – as we help them learn about our community and our culture, we also learn about theirs. Please help us continue our mission of resettling refugee familes in our community.

East Rock Brewing Company is a small, family-owned brewery located in the heart of the East Rock neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut. At the brewery, we use time-honored methods and imported ingredients to produce pure and crisp German-inspired beer. Painfully slow to make but a pleasure to drink, our beers undergo a prolonged and labor-intensive fermentation, resulting in an uncommon depth of flavor and natural carbonation. Our family-friendly beer hall is a cheerful social space to gather in celebration of the simple things in life while enjoying one of our 12 draft beers and delicious pretzels.
