SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh
DESCRIPTION:FARMINGTON HILLS\, MI\n\nThe Congregation for Humanistic Judais
m and Jewish Voice for Peace-Detroit invite you to a Lunch &amp\; Learn wi
th Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh. Mazin and his wife Jessie will explore diversity an
d decolonization of minds and nature\, and challenges to climate justice a
nd human rights in Israel-Palestine and globally . A light lunch will be s
erved.\n\nOur planet is suffering from human-induced climate change\, over
 -exploitation\, habitat destruction\, pollution\, wars\, colonialism\, and
other effects. These cause massive destabilization and suffering that imp
act all living forms. Sustainable human and natural communities are achiev
able and dependent on creating nature-based solutions.\n\nDr. Mazin B. Qum
siyeh will discuss examples of challenges and solutions with a focus on Pa
lestine.\n\nMazin mentions in his book Sharing the Land of Canaan about
peaceful coexistence between the different ethnicities and religions in Pa
lestine and Israel. A great many of Palestine’s ancestral farmlands and
orchards have been destroyed\; bulldozed and replanted with non-native pin
e trees. These pine plantings have been at the expense of native biodivers
ity and have been the cause of much wildfire the past few years\, subseque
ntly causing erosion and ecological disaster. Meanwhile\, much of the wate
r flow to the West Bank has drained wetlands and water tables\, causing fu
rther depletion of biodiversity. These are some of the issues that Mazin a
nd his wife Jessie will explore.\n\nA renown Palestinian-American author\,
educator and activist\, Mazin formerly worked at Tennessee\, Duke\, and Y
ale Universities in the medical field. He returned to Palestine in 2008\,
and currently is a professor at Bethlehem University. He is the founder an
d director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability
(PIBS) at Bethlehem University (palestinenature.org). Both he and Jessie a
re volunteers at PIBS. He has published widely on the topics ranging from
cultural heritage to human rights to biodiversity conservation to cancer.
He oversaw a number of projects ranging from formulating the National Biod
iversity Strategy and Action Plan to empowerment projects with farmers\, w
omen\, and children. The programs he and his wife created have impacted th
ousands.\n\nPlease RSVP so we prepare enough food.
