This session will explore the history and culture of the Americas through a little-explored lens – the legacy, impact, and influence of diverse Muslim cultures in the region. Starting with the foundational narratives of the new world, we will explore orientalism in the Latin American context, the slave trade and slave revolts, immigration from the Arab world, and stories of assimiliation, success, conflict, and identity formation as Muslims make their mark through a “crescent under another horizon.”
