SUMMARY:Michel Khleifi's FERTILE MEMORY (1980) – A Landmark of Palestinia
 n Cinema
DESCRIPTION:LOS ANGLES\, CA\n\nAs part of their July series "US Tour\," 7th
House is proud to present a rare screening of Palestinian filmmaker Mich
el Khleifi's gorgeous\, meditative\, and deeply affecting landmark film F
ERTILE MEMORY (1980). The sole film in 7th House's series not set on Ame
rican soil\, it nevertheless reverberates with our nation's contemporary i
mpact abroad. The first full length film to be shot within the disputed P
alestinian West Bank "Green Line\," FERTILE MEMORY is the feature debut
of Khleifi\, acclaimed director of the Cannes Film Festival triumph\, WE
DDING IN GALILEE. Lyrically blending both documentary and narrative elem
ents\, Khleifi skillfully and lovingly crafts a portrait of two Palestinia
n women whose individual struggles both define and transcend the politics
that have torn apart their homes and their lives.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nGrandmothe
r Romia fights an unending legal battle with the Zionist authorities who c
onfiscated her ancestral land soon after the Israeli occupation in 1947. W
ith her family scattered all over the globe while she works in an Israeli
factory\, Romia doggedly maintains a dignity and passion that for her are
the difference between mere subsistence and tenacious survival. Sahar Khal
ifeh\, a divorced novelist and young mother living in the West Bank\, stru
ggles to maintain a modern role for herself within her increasingly intole
rant occupation community. Representing both contemporary Arab womanhood a
nd vanguard Palestinian conscience\, Sahar must balance the changes in her
world after the Six Day War with the changes in herself after achieving p
ersonal emancipation.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nWith painterly flair\, Khleifi elevate
s the everyday details of Romia's and Sahar's lives to a timelessness as i
rresistible as the hauntingly beautiful desert landscape they fight for.
Whether in a tearful lullaby or a sensuously performed lover's lament\, th
e women of FERTILE MEMORY lend tender and powerful voices to their peopl
e's chorus of outrage. Michel Khleifi's poetic and powerful film puts a di
stinctively feminine expression on the ordinarily violent and male dominat
ed face of Palestinian resistance.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nDir. Michel Khleifi\, 19
 80\, 99 mins\, Palestine\, Arabic w/ English subtitles\, Unrated\, Color\
, Digital.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\nTicket price: $12 (in person event only)
