About this Event
April 12-May 13, 2021 is the Muslim American Month of Ramadan. The Office of Community Partnerships Middle Eastern American Advisory Group (MEAAG), Arab Americans of Montgomery County (AAMC), and the Muslim Voices Coalition (MVC) will hold an intergenerational virtual proclamation gathering on Sunday, April 18th, from 4 pm to 4:45 pm. It will be emceed by MEAAG high school intern Layla Obeid. County Executive Marc Elrich (confirmed) and County Council President Tom Hucker (invited) will present the proclamation to the community. Cultural presentations will begin with an introduction to the county’s Muslim American community by Samira Hussein, AAHM Chair. Imam Tarif Shraim, Muslim Chaplain of the University of Maryland/College Park, will speak about Ramadan as a pillar of Islam. Dr. Wafa Hozien, Professor of Educational Leadership, will discuss influential American Muslims. Dr. Ilhan Cagri, MVC Co-founder, will reflect on the meaning of Ramadan during the Covid-19 pandemic. A Q&A session will follow.
