SUMMARY:Monuments Decolonized: Algeria’s French Colonial Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Book panel discussion with Sysan Slyomovics\, Zeynep Celik and
Ralph Ghoche\, introduced by Emmanuelle Saada\n\n"Statuomania" overtook Al
geria beginning in the nineteenth century as the French affinity for monum
ents placed thousands of war memorials across the French colony. But follo
wing Algeria's hard-fought independence in 1962\, these monuments took on
different meaning and some were "repatriated" to France\, legally or cland
estinely. Today\, in both Algeria and France\, people are moving and remov
ing\, vandalizing and preserving this contested\, yet shared monumental he
ritage.\n\nSusan Slyomovics follows the afterlives of French-built war mem
orials in Algeria and those taken to France in her new book\, Monuments De
colonized: Algeria’s French Colonial Heritage (2024\, Stanford Universit
y Press). Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews in both countries\
, she analyzes the colonial nostalgia\, dissonant heritage\, and ongoing d
ecolonization and iconoclasm of these works of art. Her book offers a fres
h aesthetic take on the increasingly global move to fell monuments that ce
lebrate settler colonial histories.\n\nSusan Slyomovics is Distinguished P
rofessor of Anthropology and Near Eastern Languages &amp\; Cultures at the
University of California\, Los Angeles. Her previous books include The Ob
ject of Memory: Arab and Jew Narrate the Palestinian Village (1998) and Ho
w to Accept German Reparations (2014).\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by th
 e Maison Française\, Department of Anthropology\, Middle East Institute\,
and the Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning and Preservation.
