Join us at the Asheville Rhythm Studio for a series of four 2-hour workshops exploring Moroccan Trance Rhythms from the Aissawa tradition. This Moroccan style is exceptionally hypnotic, energizing, and intoxicating. The classes will be led by guest artist, QUENTIN SHAW, who has spent many years traveling to and from Morocco to study music, drumming, and trance technology. The classes will be held on Sundays, January 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 3pm to 5pm and will be available for both online and in-studio participants. Cost is $100 for the full series in-studio or $80 for the full series online. It is an honor to have him guide us in this beautiful and ancient form of expression. During this series, YOU WILL LEARN:> History, context, and lineage behind these traditions. Basic frame drum playing techniques in upright “Moroccan style” on tarija (small goblet drum), tibla (kettle drum), tasa (metal dish), tabl (double-headed cylinder drum) – instruments will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own frame drum if you have one>The 3 levels of trance experience according to Aissawa tradition, including healing trance rhythms and movement>About “bararaka” and how it is shared.>PLUS+ Warm up & Hand stretches for Drummers! ABOUT QUENTIN: Quentin Shaw is a world traveler, musician, teacher, drum-maker, and artist. He has been traveling to and from Morocco for over two decades, immersing himself in the different musical traditions and trance practices of the cultures there and studying with master musicians. These journeys have endowed him with a unique perspective and repertoire as a musical performer.
