SUMMARY:MY BROTHER\, MY LAND | A Busboys and Poets Books Presentation
DESCRIPTION:DC.\n\n\n\n\nIn 1967\, Sireen Sawalha's mother\, with her young
children\, walked back to Palestine against the traffic of exile. My Brot
her\, My Land is the story of Sireen's family in the decades that followed
and their lives in the Palestinian village of Kufr Ra'i. From Sireen's ea
rly life growing up in the shadow of the '67 War and her family's work as
farmers caring for their land\, to the involvement of her brother Iyad in
armed resistance in the First and Second Intifada\, Sami Hermez\, with Sir
een Sawalha\, crafts a rich story of intertwining voices\, mixing genres o
f oral history\, memoir\, and creative nonfiction.\n\nThrough the lives of
the Sawalha family\, and the story of Iyad's involvement in the Palestini
an Islamic Jihad\, Hermez confronts readers with the politics and complexi
ties of armed resistance and the ethical tensions and contradictions that
arise\, as well as with the dispossession and suffocation of people living
under occupation and their ordinary lives in such times. Whether this sto
ry leaves readers discomforted\, angry\, or empowered\, they will certainl
y emerge with a deeper understanding of the Palestinian predicament.\n\nAu
thor Sami Hermez is joining us on the Busboys stage to share his and his f
amily’s experience as Palestinians living under military occupation. Cop
ies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event\
, and Hermez will be signing following the program.\n\nThis event is free
and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm\, and will be followed by a
n audience Q&amp\;A. Copies of MY BROTHER\, MY LAND will be available for
purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is in pe
rson and will not be livestreamed.\n\nWe ask that guests RSVP in order to
receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books\n\nSam
i Hermez is an anthropologist and teaches at Northwestern University in Q
atar. He is the author of War Is Coming: Between Past and Future Violence
in Lebanon (2017). His work in and out of the classroom reflects a strong
commitment to freedom\, justice\, and equality. His family's history of mi
 gration spans the Levant\, with roots in Al-Qosh\, Aleppo\, Beirut\, and J
erusalem. Sami lives in Doha with his family.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
