Description

What is it like being a refugee in America today? How can clinicians and other healthcare professionals best serve this population? And how should the process of care change when the patient is experiencing an ongoing crisis? Join us at the upcoming Gather & Grow event for both professional development and networking.

Learning objectives

  • Gain an understanding of what the process of being a refugee in the US looks like
  • Recognize the work of community partners and how to access resources providers can use leverage in caring for refugee patients
  • Identify strategies for communicating effectively with refugee patients, particularly around trauma-informed and culturally competent care
  • Understand the components of the physical exam refugees are required to obtain shortly after being admitted
  • Gain an awareness of the gap in mental health services

Speakers

  • Dr. Deane DeFontes – Former Site Medical Director with Mid-County Medical Clinic
  • Dr. Lauren McNaughton – Retired pediatrician in Salem, Volunteer with Salem for Refugees
  • Matthew Westerbeck – Program Manager, Refugee Services with Catholic Charities Oregon
