DESCRIPTION:Evanston\, Illinois.\n\nMENA welcomes musician Issa Boulos for 
 this lecture in the Palestine in Context series.\n\nThe period from 1973 t
 o 1993 was significant for the music scene in the West Bank. Palestinian m
 usical output changed significantly after 1967 when Israel occupied the re
 st of Palestine. A new kind of music emerged in opposition to the occupati
 on\, addressing issues of social justice and class inequality. During the 
 1970s\, musicians in the West Bank\, such as Mustafa al-Kurd\, made origin
 al contributions\, creating an Arab musical and cultural voice with a clea
 r Palestinian character. In the early 1980s\, the musical groups Sabreen a
 nd al-Rahhala rose to prominence. This period also saw the start of the Pa
 lestinian Intifada in 1987\, which had a significant impact on the Palesti
 nian struggle and culture. The music during this time reflected the social
  and political conditions\, serving as a form of resistance and expression
  for the Palestinian people.
