Palestinian Waste Canvas Technique: Organic Cotton Drawstring Pouches

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Learn traditional Palestinian tatreez embroidery using the ancient waste canvas method!

Palestinian women have been creating traditional embroidered garments since the eleventh century, and for hundreds of years have been producing a long-sleeved dress called a thobe primarily using the cross-stitch. The thobe is first embroidered onto fabric using waste canvas, and after all the pieces are completed they are sewn together into a single garment. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim, learn the waste canvas technique by transferring the ancient Palestinian pattern, (you will choose between the disc of stars or amulet design), on an 8×10 organic cotton drawstring pouch.

Open to students of all skill levels, the workshop covers the basics of transferring a pattern to fabric, how to use waste canvas and remove it, threading a needle, the use of ombre thread and two methods of cross-stitching. Students will be given multiple motif options that will speak to varying experience levels. All supplies are provided — however, bring your favorite tweezers and reading light if you have a preference. No experience is required.

Students take home a multipurpose embroidered drawstring pouch, as well as strategic guidance on managing waste canvas projects.

The project featured here was created by Wafa, using the amulet motif.
