Many Syrian refugees have suffered physical and emotional traumas, including being subjected to or witnessing violence, being separated from loved ones, displacement, and resettlement issues. Muslim refugees face increased obstacles to resettlement in the US, as well as additional stigma and marginalization. Many Arabs living in the United States, regardless of refugee or immigrant status, experience trauma and marginalization due to racism, Islamophobia, micro-aggressions, violence, and other intersecting factors.

At this 2 CE credit workshop, learn how to incorporate a culturally-sensitive approach in your clinical practice to address the complex needs of these communities.

Provides 2 hours of approved continuing education credit for counselors, social workers, and psychologists.

Key Takeaways:

Discuss the history of immigration in Arab and Arab-American communities

Distinguish the values and norms of Arab and Western Cultures, including similarities, and identify potential stereotypes and pitfalls to be avoided

Review severe stigma and possible trauma associated with seeing any psychological professional

Discuss sensitive considerations and a structured approach to treating this population
