Oman with its natural splendor and welcoming people has great potential to capitalize on the international park ecotourism market. Questions remain, however, about how to promote park ecotourism as relevant to multiple audiences – government, private industry, local residents, and tourists alike.
This lecture highlights research undertaken to maximize the environmental and economic impact of Al-Saleel Nature Park. Primary findings suggest the importance of increasing awareness about ecotourism and the need for increased institutional capacity to support it via an interdisciplinary approach.
Elizabeth Perry, Ph.D., conducts research on visitor use of and community relations with parks and protected areas. She is especially interested in enhancing the relevance of a variety of parks to their local populations and furthering the science and theories related to these connections. Building on her extensive research and work history in U.S. state and national parks, she assists managers in examining how to proactively and collaboratively adapt these places to changing conditions. Dr. Perry was the 2018 SQCC Research Fellow and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at Clemson University, where she researches and teaches about park social science.
