DESCRIPTION:One of the best-kept secrets of early New York is the presence 
 of the first Arabic-speaking community in the United States\, located on W
 ashington Street on the Lower West Side of Manhattan\, first settled in 18
 80.\n\nal Qalam: Poets in the Park will be performed by three musicians f
 rom the New York Arabic Orchestra who will collaborate with two reciters\,
  Hani Bawardi and Rita Elojail Zihenni\, to celebrate the literary contrib
 utions of the early Arabic-speaking community in Lower Manhattan. Predomin
 antly Syrian and Lebanese\, these early writers formed a literary associat
 ion called al Rabitah al Qalamiyah (the Pen Bond)\, among whose founders w
 as famed author\, poet and artist Kahlil Gibran. The musicians will integr
 ate their classical Arabic music with the poetry readings\, using traditio
 nal musical instruments.\n\nal Qalam will take place in The Battery Labyr
 inth just in front of Castle Clinton at The Battery.\n\nThe Little Syria:
  New York Walking Tour\, on June 17th\, will culminate in The Battery Lab
 yrinth before the al Qalam: Poets in the Park performance. See https://l

 al are free and all are welcome. You are invited to bring a blanket to si
 t on the grass.\n\nACCESS INFO:\n\nThis performance will take place on the
  grass in The Battery Labyrinth which is a garden. The Battery Labyrinth i
 s in front of Castle Clinton at The Battery. Look for River to River staff
  and signage. The ground is soft and may be uneven. There is very limited 
 chair seating\, we encourage you to bring a blanket to sit in the grass an
 d enjoy the performance. Limited chair seating will be available upon requ
